A text message (text for short) is a visual electronic communication sent from one mobile phone to another. The limitations of the screen format of a mobile phone have given rise to ingenious conventions for abbreviating the written language and reducing the awkwardness of the miniature environment in which the message appears. Some of these use existing abbreviations such as the ampersand (&) and the ‘at’ sign (\@). Others employ phonetic substitutions, such as ‘l8’ (= late), ‘2nite’ (= tonight), ‘thanx’(= thanks), and ‘u’ (= you). Concerns that this practice might corrupt use of language more generally are misconceived; such practices are as old as writing itself, and because they are a response to the restrictions of the medium they do not normally extend beyond it.
